Inspiring Visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology

Year 10 and 11 pupils recently spent a fascinating day at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, mid Wales. CAT is an education and visitor centre demonstrating practical solutions for sustainability and is a model for all things green and eco-friendly including renewable energy, woodland management, environmental building and organic growing.

Reinforcing what they had been learning in Science and Design & Technology lessons pupils were thoroughly engrossed in the various experiments led by experts in renewable energy. From using mini storm kettles heated by the burning of wood to investigating electricity generated by solar panels to building their own miniature wind turbines, pupils had a great time and enjoyed the hands-on experiences that brought to life what they had learnt in the classroom whilst at the same time highlighting the importance of sustainable living.

The visit ended as it had begun with a journey in a water powered cable car which traversed a steep vertical drop back to the car park.
