Welcome

Llandovery College has a rich tradition of excellence in the Arts and our unique Performing Arts Academy has been established to fully support those students who are passionate about their chosen discipline, be it acting, dance, vocal or instrumental performance.

The Performing Arts Academy offers pupils specialist training in the Arts alongside traditional GCSEs in Drama or Music. It aims to develop the whole performer through immersive activities that are bespoke to the individual student such as masterclasses delivered by in-house and external practitioners, workshops, and performance opportunities providing students with all the skills to become an outstanding performer.

There is also the option for pupils to achieve a BTEC Level 2 Award qualification, although it is understood that for many the Academy will purely be about their love and enjoyment of practical work.

The close staff to student ratio enables teaching staff to expertly develop pupils’ confidence, individuality, technique, motivation and, above all, performance skills.

Music Scholarships

Available for entry into Years 7 – 10 and 12

Music Scholarships are awarded to those displaying excellent musical potential. A Scholarship will include free tuition in the candidate’s principal instrument/voice. The standard of performance expected is Grade IV at Year 7 entry and Grade VI at Sixth Form entry (ABRSM standard or equivalent). However, evidence of talent and promise of development is of more importance than actual examinations passed. Candidates may offer a second instrument of a lesser standard, or a piece of composition in lieu of a second instrument.

Candidates will be interviewed by the Director of Music and a Music Department member of staff. Of particular importance is the candidate’s desire to play a leading role in the College’s music ensembles; the Choir, Chapel Choir and the College Orchestra. A practical assessment will last approximately 45 minutes and will comprise of:
  • The performance of two contrasting pieces
  • Sight reading tests
  • Aural tests
